What this is
Journey to the West is a writing companion for 西遊記, made by Technologies InstantHPI Inc. It runs in a browser and — on a phone or tablet — as an installed app that keeps working with no connection. Three hundred and sixty-five passages of the journey west, written by hand, one day at a time, from the stone monkey to the scriptures that come home.
Getting help
- Words you have never met before: tap a word to see its meaning.
- A verse you cannot finish: the guide shows the stroke order, and you can trace it again as many times as you like — nothing is graded.
- Where you were: the app opens on the verse you last worked on. Your finished verses, streak and settings are kept in this browser.
- Installing it: on a phone or tablet, use the browser's "Add to home screen" or "Install app" action. After that it opens like any other app, even offline.
Reporting a problem
Email info@instanthpi.ai and say what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. If you can, mention the device and the browser or the installed app, and whether you were offline at the time. A screenshot helps.
Privacy and the text
What is stored and what is never sent is on the privacy policy, with the terms, and the full list of sources and their licences on the Sources and licences page.
Support this work
Every verse and feature is free, and giving is optional: no account or payment is required to read or practise, and giving unlocks nothing. Payments are in US dollars (USD) and are received by Technologies InstantHPI Inc.
Give 5 USD a month (a recurring gift that continues until you cancel it), or give once (5 USD suggested, 0.50 USD minimum; a one-time gift does not repeat).
Both links open a Stripe payment page, so the card details are entered on Stripe's page and never in this app. A monthly gift can be cancelled at any time through the Stripe billing page. No charitable tax receipt is issued for a gift.
This edition takes no payment: there is no donation link and no purchase anywhere in the app.
